After the rain, the basement still holds a faint scent of rubber tires mingled with asphalt. He slips off his black racing gloves, shuts the car door with a quiet click, and takes the elevator up. Floor numbers flicker past, leaving the dampness and noise behind. As he opens the front door, the familiar stillness of home greets him. There is very little in the space: pale wood, grey-white walls, a low sofa, and the afternoon light moving slowly across the room. The air is so still that one could almost hear the coffee cooling.
First-time visitors might be surprised. It is hard to imagine that this space belongs to someone who keeps a Lotus Elise in the garage downstairs. But those who truly love driving may understand that speed is not simply about reaching a destination. In certain moments, it allows the world to fall away, leaving only the engine, the road, and oneself. Years ago, when a young Ryuichi Sakamoto composed Tong Poo, perhaps he, too, was searching for something similar: a moment of stillness within a world in constant motion.
And so, rather than carrying the speed of the garage into the home, this space takes a different approach. It is a place where, once the speed comes to a halt, life begins again.

A gentle wash of warm light spills from the floor lamp in the entryway; an open book rests within reach, alongside a timeworn ceramic vessel. Together, they quietly welcome each step home.

The plants sway gently by the window as the aroma of coffee slowly fills the air. Two people curl up on the sofa, watching a film and listening to a few favorite songs, letting the afternoon light and shadows drift across the room. Gradually, time seems to slow with them.

In the afternoon, sunlight filters through the blinds, tracing a gentle, warm path across the grey-white walls and pale wood. By nightfall, the softness of natural light gives way to sharper contrasts, as more defined lines of light and shadow shape the space.

A subtle glow extends along the edge of the platform on the left, like the guiding lights of a racetrack in the dead of night. Against the understated textures of grey-white walls and pale wood, it traces a quiet transition toward the bedroom.

Stepping onto the raised platform layered with tatami, the space becomes a kind of “pit stop” within the home—a place to pause, recharge, and shift into a more relaxed rhythm of living.

It’s a place to sit and leaf through a few pages of a book, or simply lie back and do nothing, letting the mind wander. Every now and then, a few pull-ups offer a chance to stretch and move. In these unplanned moments, everyday life finds its own unhurried rhythm.

At the far end of the home lies a soft, restful retreat. A substantial wooden platform, its natural grain left beautifully exposed, anchors the softness of the bed above. Surrounded by the subtle scent of wood, the day comes to a gentle close, and sleep arrives in quiet comfort.

A white relief artwork, reminiscent of tree rings, hangs on the wall. Its layered textures intertwine with the shifting patterns of light cast through the window blinds, leaving traces of nature in quiet, flowing motion across the wall.

Without imposing cabinetry or elaborate forms, vertical wood grain runs seamlessly across the surface. The wooden handles create precise, note-like intervals, allowing storage to recede discreetly into the minimalist structure.

As “Tong Poo” fills the home, Eastern sensibilities intertwine with electronic rhythms, finding a delicate balance within the space.
